Bundles of Blessing
When Bertha Tourlitis began her term as Philoptochos president in 2009, she felt that our group needed to undertake a local philanthropic project. Her research revealed that Crozier Chester Hospital had closed its maternity ward, necessitating the transfer of many underprivileged mothers-to-be to Riddle Memorial Hospital.
Bertha contacted Martha Greico, the coordinator at Riddle Hospital, who told her that many of the new mothers needed clothing, blankets, diapers and baby items for their newborn infants. Bertha presented the idea to the women of Philoptochos, who enthusiastically accepted it, and ‘Bertha’s Baby Bundles’ was born. Since then, our members have been bringing NEW baby items to the monthly meetings.
In the past 5 years, Philoptochos has assembled 45 bundles, which have been distributed to over 100 mothers. Included with the bundles are beautiful, warm baby blankets, hand-knit by some of our very talented women.
We would like to encourage all of St.George’s parishioners to participate in this wonderful, worthwhile endeavor. Just buy and give a new baby item to any Philoptochos member. It will be included in a bundle and sent as a caring gift for a precious, newborn child.
